Open this page on your teaching computer and press Start. Your browser will ask to use the microphone once — allow it, and nothing is recorded.

Hit Fullscreen so the meter fills your board or projector. Press Esc to come back out.

Set the noise limit to suit the activity — lower for quiet reading, higher for group work. The marker on the bar shows where "too loud" begins.

Let the class watch it. When the room drifts over the limit the face changes and the bar turns red, which is usually all the reminder students need to settle themselves.

Why teachers find it handy

Telling a class to "quiet down" a dozen times a day is exhausting, and it puts you in the role of the nag. A visual on the wall does the reminding for you — students can see the level creeping up and bring it down without you saying a word. It works nicely for independent reading, group tasks, exam conditions, or settling everyone after lunch.

A few tips for getting the best from it

Agree on what each colour means with the class first — they respect a limit they helped set.
Match the limit to the task and say so out loud: "reading time, so we're keeping it in the green."
Give quiet stretches a quick bit of praise. Catching them being calm works better than reacting to noise.
The calm-streak timer is handy for a gentle challenge — "can we beat yesterday's five minutes?"
Don't chase the exact number. It's a rough guide to help self-regulation, not a precise sound-level reading.
