The short version

The important bit first: your microphone audio is analyzed on your device in real time and is never recorded, stored, or sent anywhere. To keep this tool free, we show ads through Google AdSense, and those ads use cookies. The sections below spell out exactly what's collected, by whom, and how to opt out.

Microphone access

When you press "Start measuring", your browser asks for permission to use the microphone. The audio stream is used only to calculate a live loudness value (decibels) and a frequency visualization. The raw audio:

• is processed in memory by your browser's built-in Web Audio API,
• is never saved to disk, never recorded, and never transmitted over the network,
• is released the moment you press Stop or close the page.

You can revoke microphone permission at any time in your browser's site settings.

What we store on your device

The site itself keeps just two small things in your browser's local storage: your theme preference (dark or light) and whether you've dismissed the cookie notice. Neither of these leaves your device, and you can clear them any time by clearing your browser's site data. The advertising described below sets its own separate cookies.

Advertising and cookies

We use Google AdSense to display advertising, which is what pays for keeping Noise-Meter free. Advertising involves cookies, and here is the plain-English version of how that works:

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website and other sites around the web.
• Google's use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners show ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
• Other third-party ad networks or vendors may also place cookies when they serve ads through the same system. We don't control these cookies directly.

You are in control of this. You can turn off personalized advertising in your Google account at Google Ads Settings, and you can opt out of many other third-party vendors' advertising cookies at www.aboutads.info/choices. Opting out doesn't remove ads — you'll simply see less personalized ones.

Analytics

We don't run our own analytics or tracking scripts. Any data collection on this site comes from the Google advertising described above — nothing else.

Contact form

The contact form does not submit anything to a server. It opens a pre-filled draft in your own email app; the message is sent by you, from your own email account, only if you choose to send it.

Decibel readings are estimates based on your device's microphone and are provided for general awareness, not for professional or official measurement. For accurate readings, use a calibrated sound level meter.
